Today, Infinity Lab and my FTC robotics team held a volunteer event at the library where we helped kids build robots. Since it’s winter break, there weren’t many people at the library—only four of them: Glenmory (age 11), Ana (age 10), Jazlyn (age 12), and Joey (age 22).
Claire, Emily, Raina, and I worked together during this event. When we arrived, we met the library staff and got set up where the attendees could sit and work comfortably.
We started by giving a short presentation and overview about robots, explaining what they are, how they work, and how robots are used in everyday life and different careers. We kept it simple and engaging so everyone could understand, even if they had never worked with robots before.

After the introduction, we assisted the students in building LEGO robots. We brought three Apitor R LEGO robot kits, and we guided Glenmory, Ana, Jazlyn, and Joey step by step through the building process. We helped them identify the pieces, follow the instructions, and troubleshoot when they got stuck or confused. Everyone worked at their own pace, and we made sure each participant was involved and understood what they were doing while having fun.

Once the robots were finished, the attendees were able to use iPads to control them. We showed them how to connect the robots and use the controls, and then let them experiment with moving the robots around. Everyone was excited to see their robots come to life and enjoyed testing out what they could do. Overall, the activity was very interactive and hands-on, and it seemed like Glenmory, Ana, Jazlyn, and Joey had a lot of fun while also learning about robotics and technology.
