Bingo and the Super Bowl! - 2/08/2026 Senior Center Service
Authored by Tristan Shi Today we played Bingo with the seniors downstairs. There were around 5-6 seniors who were each in good spirits. We played many games, and the seniors had a great time playing. Today was special because it was the Superbowl, so there were massive trays of food filled with vegetables, chicken strips, and corn dogs for everyone to eat. We helped pass out the food and drinks to the seniors while they kept playing bingo. By the end of the game, everyone was

Teaching with Heart: A Pre-Valentine’s Day Lesson - 02/07/2026 Library Service
Authored by: Cielle Chan As soon as I arrived, I began by introducing myself and asking the students to share their names and grades so everyone could feel comfortable and included before we started. We began the lesson with gentle stretches to prepare our bodies for singing, followed by vocal warm-ups to get our voices ready. After warming up, we moved into solfège. Since none of the students had attended the previous session, I taught solfège from scratch. We went through i

Piano, Laughter, and Bingo - 01/25/2026 Performance and Game Hosting
Authored by Rien Chen This was our first senior center performance of 2026, and it was a wonderful visit! I kicked off the performances with The Name of Life by Joe Hisaishi on the piano, beautifully arranged by Makiko Hirohashi. I practiced a lot for this piece, and it turned out quite well! The audience seemed to really enjoy it. Next was Elena Chen on the piano, performing the classic Nocturne in C# Minor by Chopin. The piece is quite dreamy and wonderful to listen to; a

A Strong and Creative Start to Our 2026 Tutoring Year - 01/17/2026 Library Service
Authored by: Cielle Chan Today marked our first tutoring lesson of the 2026 year, and it was an exciting start. When we arrived at the library, several students were already waiting for us, eager to begin, so we jumped right in. I opened the lesson by having everyone introduce themselves, sharing their name, grade, and favorite color, to break the ice and get everyone comfortable before starting. Once everyone felt settled, we eased into gentle stretches to prepare our bodies

Painting the World Within on T-Shirts - 01/11/2026 S senior Center Service
Authored by Rien Chen This past Sunday, we returned to the R.P. Senior Center. Annie and I spent the day helping the seniors paint t-shirts using squeeze bottles, and it was amazing to see how much creativity came out of such a simple activity. Many beautiful designs were made. Some were simple yet clever, like one t-shirt that looked like mistletoe, created with flowing green lines and a small dab of orange paint. Others were playful and full of personality, including a chee

Claire, Emily, Raina, and I worked together during this event. When we arrived, we met the library staff and got set up where the attendees could sit and work comfortably. We started by

Sharing Christmas Carols with Seniors Before Dinner - 12/23/2024 Senior Center Performance
Authored by Cielle Chan Featuring (from left to right, back to front) Leia Huang, Joyce Chen, Sophia Chu, Cielle Chan and Eileen Terral. The senior living center had hoped to include caroling before their all-together Christmas dinner. Because it was so close to Christmas, many of my friends were already out of town, which made organizing a group a little challenging. Thankfully, a few friends were still around and available to help. We were asked to arrive at 4:30 PM for car

Authored by Rien Chen This volunteer service was our last art tutoring activities of the year and took place right before Christmas. Elena, my mom, and I prepared a Christmas tree at home using cardboard, making sure it would be easy for kids to decorate at the library and turn into something cute and special. When I carried the tree to the library, Cielle had already started her singing lesson. I sat down to watch for a bit and then began preparing more circular paper orname

Authored by Rien Chen Time really flies! In the blink of an eye, Christmas is here again, and I still remember our performance at the senior home last year. Today’s program opened with Cielle singing the beautiful Christmas song “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” Her voice, as always, was warm, expressive, and full of emotion, instantly bringing everyone into the holiday spirit. She was greeted with enthusiastic applause from the audience. When she performed her

A Fun Jeopardy Afternoon with the Seniors - 11/09 /2025 Game Hosting
Authored by Tristan Shi Today we played jeopardy with the seniors upstairs. There were about 7 to 8 people there, picking the categories and answering the questions. We handed out fake money to the seniors who got the question correct, and they had a great time playing. Some jeopardy questions were about literature and history, while others were about sports, but the seniors did a great job, and only missed a tiny fraction of the questions. After the jeopardy game, we met a s

Authored by Cielle Chan We started at V.P. Library for the 1:00–1:50 PM session. We arrived early to set up and waited, hoping to see at least a few students walk through the door. By the end of the session, it was clear no one would be coming. It wasn’t the most encouraging start, but we packed up and moved to our second site at S.H. Library. At S.H. library , the room was empty at first as well. We asked the staff to make an announcement, and after that, didn't bring anyone

With the smaller group, I was able to guide her through the music more in-depth and help strengthen her confidence. We began with some gentle stretches to prepare our bodies, followed by tongue twisters like “Red leather, yellow leather” and “Unique New York.” Though she found them a little tricky at first, I reminded her t
